Currently, the main method of determining bone density is through the use of low-energy X-rays, which are expensive and inaccessible to many. This innovation is a portable optical screening device developed for osteoporosis patients which utilizes reflected light intensity to measure bone density. Preliminary human testing has shown an accuracy of up to 70 percent, which is sufficient for osteoporosis screening. The device is lightweight, low cost, easy to use and safe. It can easily be carried to screen elderly people in rural hospitals.
